thinkstep Italy Presents at the 24th International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS) Conference
On the opening day of the ISDRS Conference, thinkstep presented an “LCA Study of a Circular Tile”, assessing the production of an innovative “green” ceramic tile. This very innovative ceramics product developed by our clients, Marazzi Group and Centro Ceramico Bologna, contains over 70% recycled ceramic waste from the End-of-life phase.
To quantify the circularity of the product, we used the GaBi Circularity tool to calculate its Material Circularity Indicator (MCI). The presentation forms a part of the European project WINCER: a “circular ceramic tile“.
The International Sustainable Development Research Society is an international network of more than 2,200 members that connects academic and professional players who work in sustainable development. This year’s conference took place in Italy for the first time, at the University of Messina.
thinkstep conducted the LCA study on Marazzi’s test product to better understand the environmental performance of this innovative technology beyond its high percentage of recycled material content. The LCA study brought evidence to support the claim that LCA methodology and the calculation of MCI can help explore and identify opportunities in circular product re-design and development.
The study was completely in line with the focus of the conference, namely action for a sustainable world: from theory to practice. Though to be more faithful to the study, the motto could be extended to read “From theory to practice and from practice to theory”. One conclusion of the study was that the cause/effect dynamics of theory and practice in a case with optimal conditions is also, in a sense, circular.
